The History Of The Bingo Game

The modern day bingo game was originally a form of lottery. When Italy was united in 1530, the government instituted the Italian National Lottery. All the Lotto cards were unique. Players would be dealt a single lotto card, whilst someone would draw chips, marked from 1 to 90, from a bag and read the number aloud. Players covered the numbers on their cards if it were read. The first player to cover a complete horizontal row was the winner. In the 1800’s educational games became popular. Lotto games were adapted to teach children spelling, multiplication tables, animals and history. Even today, in the very competitive toy and game market, similar games are popular.

One evening in December 1929, toy salesman Edwin S. Lowe stopped at a carnival a few miles outside Jacksonville. Everything was closed except for one booth. The booth was packed with people. Someone would draw numbers from a bag and read it aloud. The players would all check their cards to see whether they got the number. The winner was the first person who filled a horizontal, vertical or diagonal row of numbers and yelled “Beano”. The winner would than receive a small Kewpie doll as price. As you can guess, this game was called Beano.

Lowe, who has owned his own toy store for about a year, saw the potential of the game immediately. Back home he bought some card and a rubber number stamp and produced his own beano game. Testing it on his friends he soon realized that the game was almost addictive and lots of fun. When one of his friends yelled Bingo instead of beano he knew he had found the name of his new game!

The first Lowe bingo game had two variations – a 12 card set for one dollar and a 24 card set for two dollar. The game was an instant success and soon became popular. Of course he was not the only one to recognize the potential of the bingo game. Many imitators soon tried to market the game. Lowe could not patent the game, but offered to pay his competitors $1 if they would call it Bingo.

A few months later Lowe was approached by a priest from a small parish. Someone in his parish suggested that they use the bingo game as a fundraiser to help the church out of its financial trouble. The priest bought a few sets of Lowe’s bingo game, but unfortunately always had six or more winners.

Lowe immediately saw the potential expansion of the game, but also knew that a huge variation of numbers for the bingo cards will have to be developed. He asked an elderly mathematics professor at Columbia University, Carl Leffler, to devise 6,000 new cards with non-repeating numbers. The professor agreed for a fee for each new card. But, as the professor continued, he found that it became increasingly difficult to produce new bingo cards. Lowe was impatient and at the end he paid Leffler more than $100 per new bingo card. Finally the task was completed, but rumor had it that the professor lost his sanity!

Soon the bingo game was one of the most popular games in North America, and it remains so until today. Many associate it with fundraising, but today Bingo is much more than a fundraiser in church halls.

Catchalotto’s view on why you should never play 1-2-3-4-5-6 in Lotto

A while ago Camelot, the UK National Lottery Official Operator, used to release combinations that were played most commonly. Unsurprisingly, combination 1-2-3-4-5-6 was one of them in that it was entered into each Lotto Draw by many people. And by many I mean thousands!!! If I recall correctly, at some stage there were about 10,000 tickets purchased for each Lotto draw containing this combination. This brings me to the reason number 1 why such combination should be avoided like the plague.

REASON NUMBER 1:

There are so many tickets being bought containing combination 1-2-3-4-5-6, the jackpot payout would be very low indeed should this combination win!

Let’s say you play 1-2-3-4-5-6 and it does win (yippee!). Let’s say you are in to share an average £3,000,000 jackpot with 10,000 other jackpot winners. This would mean that your share of winnings would be a miserable £300! Yeah, okay, still good money, beats the tenner that you get for guessing 3 numbers, but definitely this is not the money you have in mind when you dream about winning the jackpot, right?!

There are many reasons why so many of us play this combination. It’s easy to remember… It’s easy to mark on a lottery ticket… Some are lazy/short of time to pick out a good non-biased non-ordered combination…Statistically combination 1-2-3-4-5-6 has the same chances of being drawn (1 in 13,983,816), so why not play it… Some people play the same combination every time, so it could be that they played this combination for a while and do not want to give it up now in case if it does come up… Camelot no longer announces combinations that are played most commonly, so many are simply unaware how many people they will have to share their jackpot with should this combination be drawn.

Whatever the reason, it’s a pound down the drain when 1-2-3-4-5-6 is played because of the above reason alone. There is however another reason why you should NOT play this combination.

REASON NUMBER 2:

As mentioned above, statistically the combination 1-2-3-4-5-6 has the same chances of being drawn, in other words you have 1 chance of winning the jackpot with this combination and 13,983,815 chances of NOT winning it. That’s statistically.

However, if you look at vast amount of literature that is now available with regard to lottery analysis and probability laws, you would see that most authors give out a slightly different story. Most believe that the combination 1-2-3-4-5-6 is biased and is guaranteed to loose because it is far out of balance to come up in a random drawing. This opinion is based on vast research undertaken by many who analysed the draws of past lottery games from around the world!!! If six consecutive numbers have never been drawn in any of the lotteries worldwide, and six numbers from one number group have never been drawn either, then what chance does the combination 1-2-3-4-5-6 have?

It is believed that the least likely combinations to be drawn are those at the tail ends of a bell curve. These are the lowest six numbers and the highest six numbers of any lotto game.

Now onto the good news. The good news is that Lottorino can help with Lotto combination selection. It incorporates many filters and checks whether a certain combination is biased or not. Lottorino consults probability laws rather than those of possibility. The idea is that whilst it’s possible for any combination to be drawn, certain combinations are less probable to come up.

If you ask Lottorino to analyse 1-2-3-4-5-6, it would assign a low Lottorino score of 2%, meaning that this combination seems to be biased in some way and as a result assigns the probability of it being drawn as 2% (the percentage would depend how many rules/filters have been broken). By sieving out this and many other combinations, your lotto ticket simply stands better chances of being a winning one!

If you look at Lottorino’s scores of all officially drawn UK Lotto combinations in the past, you would see that some do appear to have a low Lottorino score (i.e. Lottorino would have advised NOT to play it), but 95% of time, Lottorino score is 50% or above (Catchalotto’s recommended advisable limit). So 95% of time, the odds would have been indeed improved by Lottorino.

Why Lotto Wheeling Works

You may occassionally come across websites or individuals who claim that lottery ‘wheeling’ doesn’t work (wheeling is multiple entries using combinations of a set of numbers). The usual justification for this is that they say you are entering the same number multiple times in order to create your wheel, and thus spending money needlessly. They are correct in one sense – after all, you could cover all the 49 numbers in the UK national lottery (the ‘Lotto’) in only 9 tickets (6 different numbers per ticket). On the other hand, any wheel must ‘combine’ the numbers you want in order to create possible wins on any one ticket, so, for example, you might cover only 10 or 12 numbers with the same number of tickets in order to create a guaranteed ‘3’ win.
But… and it’s a big but, in the first situation, you have only 9 chances to win the jackpot (i.e. 6 from 6 correct) and only a slim chance of any other prize too. A ‘3’ win, for example, the lowest win possible in the UK Lotto is actually quite remote, clocking in at about 55 to 1 against. In other words, if you enter your 9 tickets every week, you might expect 3 numbers once every 5 weeks or so – hardly a great return on your $50 investment!
And this is why wheels are so good – they allow you to cover large ‘ranges’ of numbers without buying all the tickets you would normally need to get the same sort of cover. The older less popular wheel would usually require you to buy a lot of tickets, but would guaranteee a certain outcome if you managed to ‘catch’ a certain number of draws in your picks. Good modern wheels provide you with ‘statistical guarantees’ – e.g. a certain wheel might require you to buy 10 tickets to cover 15 picks, with the promise that if all 6 numbers drawn are within your 15 picks, there is a 45% chance of getting 4 of them in one line, and an 80% chance of getting 3 balls in one line. Obviously, this is far more economical than buying enough tickets the ‘hard way’ to cover 15 numbers completely. What would you prefer for a prize of only $90 or $100 – an 80% chance of a win at a cost of $10 or a 100% chance of the same win at a cost of $1,000 ? Bit of a no-brainer really, isn’t it? Remember that the sites or people who decry wheeling lotto systems usually are trying to sell you their own ‘magic’ lotto ‘secrets’ – perhaps using ‘lucky irish clover’ or ‘the power of clairvoyance’. If their systems were any good, why don’t they just keep very quiet and win the lotto themselves, week after week?

Keep an eye on the most common and least common numbers over time – many people play these, because they do not understand that the lottery really is random. If you play them too, you will end up sharing any prize you win.
