Starting New With A Nursing Career

Starting New With A Nursing Career

“I just want to give something back,” says one new nurse from a recent graduating class. Unlike your typical newcomer to a nursing career, Steve is not in his twenties and female. Rather, he’s one of the growing number of ‘non-traditional’ nurses who have adopted a nursing career after a lifetime of work in another field. Nursing is growing in popularity as a second career for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is the fact that it’s a job that makes you feel good about yourself.

Known as second-degree or second-career nurses, this growing segment of the nursing world brings a unique slant to patient care. According to instructors and supervisors, second career nurses have a strong work ethic and a commitment to helping others that makes them a credit to the profession. Second career nurses come from all walks of life. Many have advanced degrees in other fields, but have traded in their Wall Street portfolios for a pair of rubber-soled shoes and a stethoscope. For some, the impetus was the loss of a job due to downsizing, but for many, the decision was a conscious commitment to giving something back to the world. They want to work in a job that directly benefits people, where they can make a visible difference in someone’s life. The hands-on medical care in a nursing career gives them a satisfaction that’s hard to find in any other line of work.

If you’re considering re-entering the work world as a nurse, there are opportunities open in hospitals, nursing homes, medical facilities, outpatient programs and public health areas. You can build a nursing career working in research and technology, or doing direct patient care, or both. An occupational nursing career can give you a chance to work in sports medicine, industrial medicine or the rehabilitation field. As a home health care worker, you can make a major difference in the quality of life for new parents and their babies, adults who are facing major medical decisions, children and families coping with diabetes and asthma and seniors who require a few hours of skilled nursing care a week in order to remain at home among their families and memories.

There are also opportunities for a nursing career in more unusual areas, especially if you choose to go on to more specialized training and acquire an advanced degree. It’s difficult to imagine a more fulfilling career than one as a nurse-midwife, helping to usher new lives into the world, for instance, or as a nurse practitioner helping parents cope with their children’s illnesses. Many second career nurses combine their former experience with their new nursing careers to open new doors. A paralegal with many years experience might work in the field of medical law as a consultant, helping hospitals and medical facilities create policies that are fair to both patients and staff. A teacher may draw on years of classroom experience to work as a nurse in the community, educating children on medical awareness and teaching them how to take charge of chronic illnesses like asthma and diabetes.

There’s almost no limit to the kinds of jobs and challenges open to someone who chooses to pursue a nursing career. If you’ve chosen to pursue nursing as a second career, take the time to study all your options and find the one that’s most satisfying for you. It may be a second career, but it’s one that can last you for the rest of your life.

Recommended Video Game System Best for Kids

There are many choices in the games that kids can play. Some are educational, fun and extra entertaining for many kids to enjoy. Because of our new innovative technology and progress, even changes in the way children games have also transformed to a more realistic and virtual game playing with contents unacceptable for many kids to view.

Before, video games were invented for educational and entertainment purposes that kids have enjoyed playing even today. Most likely, parents did not have to worry about what their kids are playing because game content was safe and fairly protected from harmful contents. Like the Atari video game system, offering wholesome games such as Pac-Man or Space Invaders, kids are open to have a fun and be entertained without any explicit content and away from corruption that could influence the children’s behavior. Unfortunately, changes in technology have altered the way video games are today. Games of today are more realistic and are in stilled with adult content that many game manufacturers have included in their games. Therefore, parents are now concerned on the typical game system that they want their kids to have. In fact, many parents are opting to find the best video game system that is best for their kids but away from adult contents and other threatening factors that could influence the kids.

Unlike before, Atari game system was the best video games made available to kids. Now, video game system has increased due to so many selections available to consumers especially to parents. Large selections of different types of game system such as Sony PlayStation 2, Nintendo’s GameCube, and Microsoft’s Xbox and Xbox 360 video games from Microsoft are some of the selections that parents consider purchasing for their kids.

The best selling game console in the market is the Sony PlayStation 2 (or often referred to as PS2), it caters to all ages while providing about 600 different types of games. These games have been rated for every age bracket to enjoy and specifically for preference of age limitation allowed for each game and level usage. For example, games rated with E are allowed for ages from six and up. Other games at this rating, however, are complicated for younger children to play therefore, rating with E10+ are advisable for children above ten years old to play. Likewise, other games for younger children below 10 are rated with EC or in other words, Early Childhood.

A popular video game system that children basically love is the Nintendo GameCube console. This game system has about 263 games that are based on children’s favorite titles like the Sega’s Sonic GEMS Collections, Mario Party 6 and Mario Tennis from Nintendo, and other game titles particularly for GameCube console that are also rated E.

Another video game system rated E is the Xbox and Xbox 360 video game with a built-in parental control. The Xbox has about 270 available games while the Xbox 360 has about 12 games and increasing with other popular releases. Although, some of these games may not only be available on the Xbox but as well, be available to GameCube and PS2 or all three video game systems mentioned. In such, the Xbox games with E rating like Astropop and Feeding Frenzy can have crossover titles that many publishers have also released and made possible to other video game system. For instance, rated E games like Eidos InteractiveLEGO Star Wars are available to GameCube, PS2 and even Xbox whereas other rated E10+ are also available to other game systems, while other games like the rated EC Global Star Software’s Dora the Explorer are solely for Xbox and PS2 only.

Choosing the best video game system for the kids is important especially if parents are very concerned in their kid’s preference in video game playing. The abovementioned video game system can help parents understand the kinds of video game system available to kids while assisting parents in finding the best video game system to give to them. Parents should keep in mind that video game systems for their kids should have parental control options on the game system to lock functions or set limits to the kind of games or titles allowed for playing or viewing. From the abovementioned video game systems, the most advisable for parents to purchase is the Xbox and Xbox 360 because it comes with a built-in parental control.

Why Should Kids Get Allowances – The Top 7 Reasons

Why Should Kids Get Allowances – The Top 7 Reasons

The question of whether allowances are right or wrong, is one that has been argued for many generations. Now it’s your turn, as a parent, to decide whether or not an allowance is the best way to educate your child about financial responsibility. There are many reasons given on why a regular payment of money to a child should or shouldn’t be done – ultimately I believe there is no right answer, it is up to each individual family to decide what is the best option for them. Through many years of working with parents and educators, these are the top seven reasons I keep hearing on the question of why should kids get allowances.

1. They learn to be wise with how they spend their money. It may help to teach them how to prioritise their spending, & learn from an early age what things are a waste of money.

2. They learn how to save money. Having a regular amount of money, may make it easier for them to establish good saving habits, as a certain percentage of the money from each payment can be placed into a savings account/piggy bank. Without an allowance, any money they receive, may simply be spent, with nothing going to savings.

3. They learn how to donate their money. A certain percentage of their money can also be allocated to donations to the needy, hopefully encouraging your child to be more thoughtful of others, & not greedy with their money.

4. They will learn how to budget their money so it lasts between payments. Eventually, most children will learn to be careful how they spend what limited money they have, so they don’t run out of money. This will only happen, if the parent doesn’t give in to the initial whining for more money when the mistake is first made!

5. They can learn to make mistakes with small amounts of money. Kids will learn how to manage their finances responsibly far quicker through being allowed to make mistakes themselves (and suffering the consequences), rather than being told how they should be managing their money by someone else. Parents need to be there to guide their children on how they should spend their money, but not dictate (unless there could be serious consequences from their mistakes).

6. They may stop nagging you for money. The idea is, if they are receiving a regular amount of money, and they have a good understanding of how to budget it then they will never run out of money, so won’t keep pestering you for more. Realistically, it will probably never put a complete end to the nagging for money, but it should reduce it.

7. You may end up forking out less money. If you sit down, and add up how much money you give your child during the week & how much you spend on items for them (e.g. clothing), it may actually work out cheaper to give them an allowance, and make them responsible for a lot of their purchases.

As I mentioned earlier, an allowance isn’t necessarily the best option for every family, but these are some of the reasons why many parents & educators believe an allowance is the only way to go. Some families though, may not have enough room in the family budget to provide their children with a regular payment, or may simply not believe in it for their own personal reasons. Either way you choose, I have seen with my own eyes, children from each side of the fence who have grown up to be exceptional money managers, and likewise children who seem to have no idea. Ultimately, it comes down to how much guidance a child receives from their parents/guardians on money – whether through an allowance or not.

Buying Jewish Paintings

Buying Jewish Paintings

I have a family that has commissioned me to find all of the Jewish paintings I can find. He has given me no budget constraints. I’m not sure why he doesn’t have guidelines set up for me to follow; he just wants to amass a collection quickly.

I found an oil on canvas that was a Jewish painting called Jewish meeting. The artist was Amparo Cruz Herrera. The artist is Spanish and this work exuded grace. I liked it a lot. I purchased it for eight thousand dollars. My benefactor was happy with the purchase.

My client made no distinction between Jewish paintings that were of a religious nature and those that were only painted by a Jewish person. I bought a rare Leon Bakst that was dated 1910. His subject was a person in an exotic costume. I’m not sure where my client plans to display it.

The next Jewish painting I found for him was a cityscape in oil of a deserted house in Veroia. This painting only cost six thousand dollars. Veroia is a Jewish neighborhood in northern Greece. I thought that this painting was a little bit unsettling.

I found another good Jewish painting for my client. The title of the painting was Juedisches Oesterreich Jewish Austria and was created by Frank Ettenberg in 2004. The person that sold me the painting said that the painting evoked a feeling of the artist’s state of being face to face with nationalism, his ethnic identity and an existential situation.

I found another Jewish painting I liked for four thousand dollars. The oil painting called Birds of Paradise was painted by Maurice Sterne. Sterne was a Jewish immigrant from Russia. He was the first person to have a retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He exhibited 174 paintings, drawings and sculptures.

I found a Jewish painting of a cat that sold for thirty five hundred dollars. The artist of this work was Wettingfeld Zarojewski. I could not find any other work from this artist at all. My client really liked it. He is also a cat lover in addition to being a collector of Jewish art.

There was a wonderful Jewish painting of a woman seated. I fell in love with it on sight. The woman depicted looks so reflective and comfortable. I feel at ease just gazing at her.

I finally found a religiously significant Jewish painting for my client. The artist was Joan Landis and the title of the painting was Simhat Torah. This is the painting that was used by Pomegranate Publishing for their 2003 calendar and their greeting cards. I thought it was lovely.

I liked the Jewish painting by Joan Landis so much that I sought out more of her work. I purchased two paintings. One of the paintings was named Shabbat and the other one was Mikveh. I took the three that I purchased to my client and he fell in love with them. He asked me to find more of her work.

I found more work by Joan Landis and I purchased every one I came across. I found three more of the Jewish paintings on eBay at reasonable prices. I purchased Shavuot, Purim and Birth for three thousand dollars each. I felt like I got a bargain.

I liked the colors in the Jewish painting I bought called The Tailor Shop. This painting was created by Jacob Glushakow. He was an active member of the Jewish community in Baltimore. His parents were immigrants from Russia at the start of WW1. He has a painting that is still kept in the permanent collection of the Baltimore Museum of Art.

I was fortunate to find two Jacob Glushakow Jewish paintings on the same buying trip. The other painting I found was entitled Barn in Maryland. I liked it a lot and my client was very pleased with what I brought for him.

Check Out These Ideas For Your Commercial Real Estate

The current state of the economy has made commercial real estate a tricky venture. Getting involved with commercial real estate comes with potential high financial risks. This article includes great advice to ensure your commercial real estate ventures will not bankrupt you, damage your business, or tarnish your reputation.

Even if you are a licensed real estate agent, there is a good chance you could benefit from the in-depth instruction of a board-sponsored commercial real estate class or workshop. This is especially true if you are just getting started in commercial real estate after establishing yourself in the residential market.

Real estate often seems like a great way to invest, and it truly often is. There are, however, many pitfalls that can happen to a new investor, and so it is very important that you do not put all of your eggs into one basket when you think about real estate.

Remember that the way you and your partners present yourself will go a long way in the negotiations. Come prepared with a suit and tie and look as sharp as possible when entering negotiations. This will help you garner respect from the seller for your prospective commercial real estate purchase.

An important thing to consider when you purchase commercial real estate is the commercial properties neighboring you. For example, if the properties near you have booming successful business you may get business by simply being next door and having a lot of customer traffic in the area. Also you could get business just from the euphoria of happy customers from the other businesses.

Keep in mind that you are buying something to make money out of it, not simply to own it. When looking at apartment buildings, think about how much people would be willing to rent these apartments for. You can also make money by re-selling your property after a few years, but this is not the main goal of commercial real estate.

Make sure you and your assets are sufficiently protected. You should of course have insurance, but what if you lose a lawsuit? Consult with a lawyer before you face a lawsuit to find out which measures you can take to protect your assets. You could for instance set up a limited liability company and buy and rent buildings through it to protect your personal possessions.

Do not rush as you are preparing to purchase commercial property. The process often takes a lot longer to complete than other real estate purchases, and you do not want to make a poor decision because you are feeling pressured or frustrated. Commercial real estate can be complex; it pays to take your time.

You can round out your portfolio by investing in commercial real estate. Make sure to do your homework and realize that there are a few different playing rules in the commercial real estate market compared to the residential real estate market. There is great potential in owning commercial real estate, just do your homework well before investing.

Commercial real estate is a rocky venture right now with the economy in the slumps and real estate sales suffering. Be careful with your investments and explore all options before jumping in to any legal agreements. The advice in this article will help you safely invest in commercial real estate.

The Indian Chess Chaturanga

The Indian Chess Chaturanga

Chess, as well all know, is a recreational and
competitive sport played between two players.
Nowadays, it is sometimes referred to as international
chess or Western chess, which is actually used to
distinguish it from its predecessors and other
variants. More so, chess is one of the world’s most
popular games, played by millions of people in clubs,
online, tournaments and informally.

However, where did chess actually began? Who were the
first people ever to invent this intellectual sport
and what was its original purpose. The chess game was
thought to have originated in India or Afghanistan
before 600 A.D. However, there are several and
unverified claims stating that the game existed as
early as 100 A.D.

The Chaturanga

The chess game has been attributed to the Indians by
both the Arabs and the Persian people. However, the
main origin of the sport has been lost in antiquity.
Chess in Old Persian and Arabic are “chatrang” and
“shatranj” respectively. Both of these terms are
derived from the Sanskrit word “Chaturanga”.
Literally, the word Chaturanga means the army of four
divisions, constituting the cavalry, infantry,
elephant and chariots, which are now being
respectively represented by the knight, pawn, bishop
and rook.

Aside from chess, Chaturanga is also presumed to be
the common origin of the Japanese shogi, the Thai
makruk, the Chinese xiangqi and the Korean janggi. The
game was played since the early 6th century or
probably earlier, hence it is believed to be the most
common and oldest version of chess.

As previously mentioned, Chaturanga consists of the
cavalry, chariots, elephants and infantry, which
reflects the four divisions of the army in ancient
India. These are additional units besides the king and
his general or counselor in the center. The Infantry
is represented by the line of advancing pawns. Located
near the center of the army are war elephants. The
horse, with a flanking horse move, is represented by
the mounted cavalry and the chariots or ships, which
move hastily and in linear fashion.

Chaturanga was originally played in an eight-by-eight
un-checkered board, also known as the Ashtapada.
Additionally, the board has markers that have meanings
still unknown today. However, it is known that these
special markers are not related to Chaturanga and were
rather drawn only by tradition. Murray, a renowned
chess historian, speculated that the board was also
used for other dice-type games, in which the markers
it contains had meanings.

The Rules of Chaturanga

The exact rules of Chaturanga are yet to be known.
However, several chess historians believe that the
game has the similar rules to Shatranj, which is its
direct descendant. By using the rules of Shatranj, the
movements of the Chaturanga pieces can be mapped out.

The Raja or King moves like the King in modern chess.
The Senapati or General, also known as the Mantri or
Counselor, moves diagonally, occupying only a single
square. Like the Rook in modern chess, the Ratha or
Chariot moves on straight lines either horizontally or

As for the Gaja or Elephant, there are three possible
moves that the piece makes, such as: two squares
diagonally, one square diagonally or forward, two
squares orthogonally.

The Horse of Ashva moves like the Knight. Foot
soldiers or the Pedati or Bhata are similar to the
pawns of modern chess.

Boating Recreation Sports

Boating Recreation Sports

There’s no doubt about it that boating is a recreational sport. It’s a calming, relaxing way to dump the stresses of life and glide along a smooth plate glass of water while enjoying the sights and sounds of nature around you. When you are into boating, there are a lot of sports you can explore for recreational value.

Water skiing is one of the most popular boating recreation sports that boaters do. It’s fun to do and requires little in the way of equipment although the equipment can be a little expensive. A nice pair of water skis can run upwards of a couple hundred dollars, and a good slalom ski can be even more expensive. However, when you consider all you really need is skis and a tow rope, it’s no wonder that water skiing is a popular boating recreation sport.

Another fun recreational sport to do while boating is wake boarding – also known as boogie boarding. This involves taking a board much life a surfboard but smaller in size. A person kneels on the board while keeping hold of the tow rope and skims across the water jumping waves.

Inner tubing is also another recreational boating sport many people enjoy. The fun part about inner tubing is that it can be done by small children and older people alike. Many tubes designed for pulling behind a boat will have handles on them to make it easier to hold on while traveling across the waves.

Fishing is a recreational sport in and of itself, but when you are fishing while boating, you get double the enjoyment. You have access to areas not easily gotten to on land where the big fish are hiding just waiting for the tasty treat at the end of your fishing line. The leisurely float with a fishing pole in your hand is a great way to enjoy recreational boating sports.

For some people, the ultimate recreational activity while boating is just sitting back and relaxing while the shore passes by. In a world where everyday life can be so stressful, relaxing can itself be considered a sport. After all, people participate in sports because they like them. Why can’t relaxation be a recreational boating sport as well?

The feel of the wind in your face as you are piloting your watercraft on a smooth lake is a recreational boating sport for anyone who loves boating. When you consider all of the other sports you can do while boating, the result is definitely some satisfying recreational activities.

Teach Kids About Money And Saving – The 10 Vital Lessons Your Child Must Learn!

Teach Kids About Money And Saving – The 10 Vital Lessons Your Child Must Learn!

Your 5-year-old daughter has started asking for money to buy sweets and toys. She obviously has a good understanding of the concept of exchanging money for items she wants or needs, but what are the important lessons you should teach kids about money and saving. You want to make sure that she doesn’t grow up into one of those kids that are constantly pestering mom and dad for money, running up credit card debts as a teenager, and not having any idea how to save.

There are 10 basic money skills that every child should learn before they enter the teenage years. It’s never too late to learn, but most children are far more receptive to ideas from their parents before they hit the age of thirteen, than after.

1. Money doesn’t grow on trees! One of the best known and oldest quotes around. It is important that children understand from early on that money is a limited resource, that mom & dad’s bank account will eventually run dry if they keep making withdrawals from it.

2. People go to work to earn money. Money is something that needs to be earned, you are never going to become financially secure sitting around not doing anything, and expecting handouts from people.

3. Credit cards are a form of borrowing. Believe it or not, surveys have shown that an alarmingly high number of teenagers don’t realise that credit cards are a form of borrowing. If they don’t understand this basic concept, it leaves them at risk of running up crippling credit card debts.

4. Avoid borrowing money where possible. Wherever possible, money should be saved rather than borrowed as borrowing attracts extra costs such as interest, which can in some circumstances, double the amount of money you need to repay.

5. There is good debt & bad debt. No debt is really all that good, but some forms of debt will make you money while others cost you money. Good debt can include a home loan, investment loan or business loan, as these items have a tendency to make money above the amount of interest you have to pay. Bad debt can include credit cards, personal loans or car loans, as these items never make you any money.

6. If you don’t have the cash to buy something, then you can’t afford it.

7. Spend less than you earn. Many people these days are spending 10% to 20% above what they earn, creating a vicious cycle of high credit card interest rates, long hours at work to pay the credit cards & in some cases bankruptcy. The knowledge of how to budget your money seems to have been lost, make sure your child learns this important lesson!

8. A portion of your money should be given to the needy. Around 10% of your money should be given to those who are in need/charities.

9. Pay yourself first. This is what I call your sanity money! Allow 10% of your money for yourself to spend however you wish.

10. Save at least 10% of your money. Like budgeting, the skill of saving money seems to have been lost over the last 20 years, with fewer people than ever before regularly saving a proportion of their income.

With these lessons well and truly learnt, your child should have no problem managing their finances in a proper manner, and avoiding the credit trap. Don’t risk your child becoming one of the hundreds of thousands of young adults that go bankrupt each year!

Can’t Quit Gambling? Don’t Bet On It

Can’t Quit Gambling? Don’t Bet On It

A preoccupation with gambling may cause some people to risk more than money. They may be gambling their health, happiness and their family’s welfare.

That’s the opinion of experts who define problem gambling as gambling behavior that causes a disruption in any major area of a person’s life. It’s estimated that 2 to 3 percent of the U.S. population suffers from a gambling problem. It can affect men or women of any age, race or religion, regardless of their social status.

Some of the warning signs to watch out for include:

• Preoccupied with gambling and unable to stop

• Gambling to win back what you’ve lost

• Lying to hide time spent gambling or unpaid debts.

Fortunately, an organization is working to ensure help is available. The National Council on Problem Gambling is the national advocate for programs and services to assist problem gamblers and their families.

Its mission is to increase public awareness of pathological gambling and to ensure the widespread availability of treatment for problem gamblers and their families. It also operates the Problem Gambling Helpline Network, a nationwide link to resources.

“A problem gambler doesn’t need to wait to ‘hit bottom’ before asking for help,” says Keith Whyte, executive director, the National Council on Problem Gambling. “Our Helpline can be used by anyone. When their problem is your problem, you as a loved one can call the Helpline to learn what help is available.”

One self-described problem gambler who turned to the Helpline for help characterized its services as being invaluable. According to Sandy Yakim, a 55-year-old teacher whose gambling increased after several personal setbacks, the Helpline provided her with emotional support and information, counseling and advice on how to get help.

Said Yakim, “I have now been clean for over a year. I have money in my savings account. I can shop a little bit. Life is good, I am happy, I have found my joy once again. The Helpline is invaluable. They provide a shoulder to cry on, but more importantly advice on help.”
